Step up soldier! You, yes, YOU can enrol at Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp a highly classified government training facility for Pychonauts!
What? You don’t know what a Psychonaut is? They’re psychically trained elite government super spies! They go around doing cool mind things! Why wouldn’t you want to be one?!

This is a call for players to play Psychonauts! It is a third-person, 3d action game (mostly with platformer elements). The difficulty is relatively easy (only the end is hard, and the beginning has some good tutorials), and it has an highly enjoyable plot with amazingly fun characters, with plenty of jokes too. Gameplay wise, all levels are well put together, highly polished and work very well.
It was developed by Double Fine Productions, the lead designer being one Tim Schafer – who also designed or co-designed Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, Brütal Legend, The Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge and Day of the Tentacle. If you enjoy the quirky humour of most of these games, this will be right up your alley. If not, try it out, it’s not utter slapstick – it’s pretty clever, and for the setting and characters surprisingly adult humour in places.
It also held up really well over time – obviously Tim Schafer knows how to make them classics.

Availability: PC, PS2 and Xbox. Works fine in all 3, even the PC surprisingly is easy to control most of the time and was patched. No longer printed, but for consoles it’s still relatively available, or much cheaper on PC via. digital distribution (although I found my PC copy cheap at a store first hand a few years ago):
- Aparantly still sold first hand in the USA (although not directly from Amazon)
- Same search at Amazon.co.uk
- Steam
- GameTap
- Available on Xbox 360 as an Xbox game
- Available on the DoubleFine store if you want it signed, they also linked to the ebay machine.
- Available on Good old Games. This might be more suitable for WINE users (and also has no DRM).
