I'll make sure to post an total list once we know all the titles.

@thisyearsmodel: I love the idea of a horror game for October! Any ideas? I've been meaning to attempt Amnesia: The Dark Descent though that's way too recent, I think. My only suggestion would be Fatal Frame. I've played the first game about 100 times but would still love to do it again.

I also understand that Persona's going to take a lot of time. We can definitely hold off on a lot of these ideas until it seems like people are ready.

Edit: Forgot to mention Tactics. I was going to get the game when it came out, but it's kind of expensive for what it is. I also only have an iPhone and it might be too small. So I'd be down with this but maybe later in the year when it's cheaper/I magically have an iPad.

@becca on FFT on iOS. Just bought it myself as I was unable to resist... On my ipod 4 the text is rather blurry... Wait for the iPad version for sure, although I think I might just grab war of the lions for PSP despite the issues it had.

Also, on a horror game. What about Sanatarium on PC or one of the early alone in the darks?

Perhaps even 7th guest.

@Becca: Fatal Frame would be awesome, although the game's a little scarce. If enough people have it/are interested I'd totally be down, though...those games are scary. I have a pretty loose definition of "horror" though...I'd even be happy with a Castlevania (those have kind of a classic "Halloween" aesthetic anyway). I'm already trying to play through all the Resident Evils in order and having a surprising amount of fun...once you get over the blocky graphics and D-level voice acting (part of the charm!), the first RE has some scares that have aged surprisingly well.

@link6616: I was hoping somebody would have some PC titles to suggest; that's probably where my game "literacy" is lowest. Kind of fascinated by the 7th Guest just because it would be fun to play an early-'90s FMV game in 2011...

CV: SotN would be great for october, but would be BEST if done either after for concurrently (or followed by) Super Metroid. Both are excellent examples of an extreme in their genre. Both are 'explore 'em ups' but Super Metroid is carefully planned with just what you need, and lots of ways to use every single thing. Any given object will be used countless times.

On the OTHER hand... SotN is also carefully thought out, but have everything, including a pair for platform shoes that 'subtly increase your height', making you taller by 1 pixel.

Also, both are super easy to access in this day and age. SotN is on PSN (for ps3 and psp!) and XBLA and of course the original console. SM is of course on VC

Links for PC titles

7th guest has been ported to iOS gizmos and it probably best obtained there.

RE2 is also one of the better RE games, and I've yet to play through which would be nice to do with others. Also, short! After running through P3 I think everyone would love a short game.

Also, I remember reading this a few years ago thinking it was a nice look over things... Not sure how much value it will be but

Ok, I have to admit I'm geeking out about this a little bit. What if we did a joint Super Metroid/Castlevania: Symphony of the Night playthrough as a way to discuss the Metroidvania format? Having played both before, that sounds doable, but for newbies that might be a little much. Maybe we wouldn't require everyone to play both but keep it all in one forum for some compare and contrast action?

Fatal Frame's not that hard to get. I was worried about that too and checked it out on Amazon. It's about 27 from Amazon, 20 from Amazon sellers, though I can see the lack of a digital version being a barrier to people, especially because a PS2 would be required.

I'm less interested in RE because I like my horror games to be on the other end of the shooter spectrum, but I this impression mostly comes from the most recent games. Maybe when we get close to October we should open a voting thread to pick one since I think the three of us discussing here would be pretty happy with any of them. I will say that I'm particularly interested in the original Alone in the Dark. That article that Link posted reminded me that I have a borrowed copy of Eternal Darkness I need to play, too. Maybe we can throw that in the ring as well.

Glad there's so much interest! I agree, as October approaches we should open a voting thread...I'm pretty flexible, and my to-play list is broad and ever-growing, so I'm sure I'll be happy with whatever game "wins."

I'd be up for a Super Metroid / Castlevania SotN combo - I've actually never played either of them (I've never played any Castlevania games, and the only 2D Metroid games I've played are the GBA ones), so I'd find it very interesting to see them both.  Though I do wonder if we'd manage to make it through both - sadly, we don't have a great record of having a critical mass finish games that we start, and having two games might exacerbate that. Or it might not, maybe it would pull in people who are interested in one but don't want to play through the other.  (Which would be fine, I don't think there's any point in getting people in trying to commit to doing both.)

I think it would be a grand experiment. And both are quite short (although both longer than loom... not sure how well finishing that went...) and the combined discussion of them by a community would be something quite excellent.

Would also be a good compromise between Halloween game and Super Metroid, which I feel a little guilty for derailing since I think people have been wanting to play it since before Zelda, hahaha.

But people will ALWAYS want to play Super Metroid!

And personally, thematic ties to SOMETHING are always nice as they get peoples mind on the game. Cathrine lifted elements from P3, OoT's remake and... I don't know about what made loom tied in with at all... Hardcoregaming101's book on adventure games?

.... Hmmm...

What about Silent Hill 2? Or should I stop trying to make this catch up through my backlog titles.

@link6616: You won't hear me complaining, I've been trying to use VGC to clear my backlog since I got here! I started Silent Hill 2 earlier this summer and put it aside after only a couple of hours (through no fault of the game, which was amazing). I had been thinking about waiting until the remaster comes out, but if enough people want to play before then I would definitely be down.

The more we've been going through persona 3, the more I'm in favour of a comparative playthrough of shorter games. One of the most interesting discussions we are having is the comparison between PSP and PS2 versions and how they work out. I'd love to do a run where that comparison is in actual fact, the core goal of discussion. In an ideal world, we'd have perhaps 2 teams of at least 5 people, one team for each game. And super ideally, those people would have more experience with the title they are not playing through for the VGC.

@link6616: I think that's absolutely right; discussion of anything is best when it doesn't presume that the subject took place in a vacuum. I really enjoyed placing Ocarina of Time in the context of the Zelda series as a whole, and am currently enjoying playing Persona 3 side by side with Catherine and finding my experiences of both games enriched.

So are you thinking Super Metroid/Symphony of the Night? I think that could be a really rich discussion, because you're dealing with two very venerable game series which came together to effectively form an entire subgenre (even some recent games could be brought into the conversation for that reason: Cave Story, Shadow Complex, et. al.). And the great thing is that if you played any console games at all in the late '80s to mid '90s, you probably have something to say about Castlevania and/or Metroid.

If this is our plan, I'll be playing SotN, since I already completed Super Metroid a year or so ago.

Hi guys. I'm happy with the suggestion of SM/SotN - I'd have to emulate them on my PC but it shouldn't be a problem, especially for SM. I only played SM for a short while and was quite unimpressed to be honest - I think I'd really benefit from a playthrough/discussion to help me appreciate why this game is considered such a classic (and if I'm still not convinced, at least I'll be more confident in defending my original opinion!)

So, I think we've got quite a few people interested, I've been round the CV series quite a few times, never really touched metroid outside of Zero Mission though... So I'd go SM

Now, champions? Step forward?

If we decide we need 2 champions, one for each game, if this starts after we finish P3 then I'd be happy to consider championing. (on the other hand, SM could be done in a weekend easily...)

I like link6616's idea to split it into two groups. Do we keep it in the same forum and have crossover threads?

I've played SotN so many times so I'd really rather be on the Metroid side. If no one else wants it, I'd champion, too.

Anyone still want to do a horror game for October? I think it'd be fun if it didn't get in the way. If I get bored enough today at work, maybe I'll make a voting thread just to see if anyone cares.

@Becca: If we can support a horror game alongside Persona, I'm all for it (and really, I don't see why we couldn't...most horror games are in the 10-hour range, and I've already been dabbling in quite a few other games as I play through P3 anyway - not to mention that not everyone involved or potentially interested in VGC is doing the Persona playthrough). So yeah, please make a voting thread, let's see if anybody else is interested!

I think it kind of was, but I was hoping for something actually scary.

Am I jumping the gun on this? Should I wait for critical mass here before making a voting thread? I figured we could tell by the number of votes if there were enough people to actually do it.

I think it's getting to the point I could be accused of spamming this thread....

Little Big Adventure came out on GoG today!!!

At some point, we must play it.

WE MUST.

Otherwise I'll cry, and you will all be sad because of this.

I'd like to play Little Big Adventure. I never got around to playing that game when it was released - I guess I was too busy playing all of the great LucasArts adventure games from that time period. But a lot of my friends played it and loved it.

Would you recommend playing the PC version or the PlayStation one?
