Kateri mentioned LOOM on Twitter a few months ago and it sounded great to me, and it seems to be available on Steam for the Mac, so I'd totally be up for that one!

I have the original CD for Loom in my basement, actually. I've never finished. the farthest I got was the volcano (just in case ) before I got stuck. It'd be cool, I'm a newbie but I can give it a hearty recommendation on what I have played of it.

Also, I've missed quite a few games that I would have liked to have played...maybe sometime we should revisit old games of old?

Here's another suggestion I could make about a shorter game, though once again it does not *quite* fit all the stipulations of a "vintage" game.

I consider Cave Story one of the most well-crafted, action-adventure 2D-platformer freeware games of the medium, and if you've ever heard of the game - whether at an online forum or from a crazed fan - you know I'm not the only one to hold this opinion. Anywhere from three to five hours of gameplay; a fairly unique and yet somehow familiar narrative; very basic (NES-esque) complexity of controls amongst challenging and well-paced level design; beautifully scored and imaged with 8-bit sounds and sprites.

Oh, and it's completely FREEWARE. Only recently did they port the game to the Wii Network, to further transport the unforgettable experience to other players.

Also - did I mention three different endings and seven different weapons? Health upgrades and an experience-and-damage-based weapon-upgrade system? Subtle secret items and insider jokes? Dialogue that made me laugh out loud? Huzzah!

It's down loadable for PC (and Mac?), takes up very little space, and runs on rather low-grade systems. I know that its release in 2004 disqualifies its "vintage-ness" based on sheer time of arrival, but the game plays and feels like an arcade classic. Only instead of most adventure games of that time, we play this one and inevitably get the "why-didn't-they-think-of-this-back-then?" feeling - one that, I would hold, defines its "vintage" qualifications.

Anyone interested? I could readily and easily set up the run-through on this game in no time...I've beaten it at least three different times with each ending.

Anyone want to go for the official pitch for any of the suggestions? I'm down for many of them. I'm also heading towards first-person shooters for my next chapter of my book, so I'd be perfectly happy to discuss a Doom or Duke Nukem 3D or what-have-you.

I've been thinking of championing an Infocom game soon.  But then Planescape came up, and I figure there might be enough overlap between the interested groups that I should hold off for a little while...

Seems kind of dead over here lately, is everyone busy with their holiday gifts or something?

Yeah, that's my theory. Well, part of it - I'm assuming that people have been relatively busy with the big new game releases from the late fall / early winter, leaving less time for older games. (I think something like that happened last year, too.) I'll try to stir something up in a month or so if somebody doesn't beat me to it. (And, to be sure, I'd be fine if somebody else did beat me to it!)

I believe since you've been doing some Monster Hunting you should add a Monster Hunter (Be it Tri, Freedom Unite, etc. etc.) thread.

P.S. I am available most of the time for those of you who are in need of HR grinding assistance. I have a wide range of weapons and armors for any type of monster though some give me more problems than others, like Diablos and Uragaan.

Thanks for the suggestion! Can you suggest an entry in the series which fits well into the Vintage Game Club concept? Or is this a non-vintage suggestion? (In which case that's great, too, but the discussion should probably be in the Off-topic conversation thread.)

I don't know if people is still interested, but I'm totally in for Loom, I've never played it before but have been interested for a long time, and Cave Story, a game I really like.

Hey, let's do Loom then! I originally suggested it, but I haven't played it before. I'd be happy to champion it, but I don't know if not having played the game is an issue. It's also only 2 hours long I read, so maybe it doesn't matter?  Should I make a separate thread about it?

Thanks for volunteering to champion! (And don't worry, no need to have played the game before.) Yes, the next step is to create a thread for it, with a post lobbying for why people might want to join in; then, if five of us (not counting you, but presumably counting orion_black and myself) are willing to commit to playing it with you, we'll pick a date and open a forum.

It might lean a bit heavily on the Adventure-side of things, what with the upcoming Loom-playthrough, but still:

Jordan Mechner's "The Last Express" has just gotten aviable on, among others, GOG. That's a game I wanted to play very much one day, so, even if it's not right now, I'd propose to have a look at it one day.

Yeah, that's a great suggestion. I don't know how people would feel about back to back adventure games (I'd be fine with it, but then again I grew up playing text adventures), but if not now then hopefully not too far down the road.

I suppose my first post is as good a time as any to chip in with a game suggestion so that I might join in on the next one? I would hope this classifies as a vintage game, I would like to suggest Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon. The last time I checked it still runs on dosbox.

To describe it would make it seem bland in comparison to the experience. I could easily sum it up with the words 'Dungeon Crawler,' but that hardly does it justice. Even now I am floored by the impressiveness of some of the pixel art that was poured into this game, and maybe blinded slightly by nostalgia, but I could picture myself playing through it again, even now, and being surprised by finding new things. New secret passages, hidden switches and devious traps to fall into.

I'm having a hard time finding a review of the game that doesn't just read off the back of the box, that makes it sound like a hack and slash, or story that you fall into and follow so I'll just mention briefly what I remember as the first moral dilemma I ever faced in a game, and please stop reading now if you are concerned with spoilers (of a game 20 years old.)

After finding my way into the dungeons of Darkmoon, I hear a pitiful voice calling out to me from behind a locked door (I say 'hear', but of course this DOS game is not voice acted. My imagination plays it up, slightly). I could ignore it, or I could use one of my keys (of which there are limited supply) to investigate. It's not the first of Darkmoon's traps that I've foolishly walked into, and the thought crosses my mind that it might be a trick, to lure me into a false sense of security. I decide to risk it and open the door, coming face to face with a halfling, I still remember his name (Insal), dressed in tatters, starving, locked away in chains. I am given the option to free him or leave him to starve, and as an adventurer of the light at this time I jump at the opportunity to free him. Why wouldn't I? So grateful is he that he jumps at the opportunity to join my party. A valuable fifth member, I load him up with food, weapons, armor and distribute the carry weight evenly among my party. He is injured however, so I take the time to set up camp and rest. When the party wakes he is gone, the gear and food with him. And there is the beauty of the game, behind the writing on the box. An entirely optional 'side quest' in which we are presented with these 'moments' beyond what is a typical hack and slash dungeon crawler. It's not the last you see of Insal. I delighted slightly to find him, much later in the game, hanging in chains again, at which point I left him there. The game is full of these tiny details, right from the start (Where you are lead to Temple Darkmoon by an elderly lady. You would never know, as a nice adventurer that she was leading you to your death. But as an evil adventurer, who would mercilessly strike her down, would learn about the secrets of the temple from the letter she carries, but also that she is not leading you to your death out of spite, but by the fact they are holding her son hostage in the dungeons. (You may never meet this lady at all, or simply dismiss her and pass her by.))

And now as I find myself getting carried away with this nostalgia trip, I feel the need to make a second suggestion. Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, just because.

I would suggest playing Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines for the next playthrough. Many different ways in which the game will play out for everyone and the individual experiences for all will undeniably be different. I have played two full playthroughs of that game with very different characters and the difference in both -- gameplay and dialogue wise -- was astonishing! Highly recommended.

Just to note, however, that I would only recommend players over a certain age playing it as,

1) It's an 18-rated game (most obvious reason ;-) )
2) It deals with adult and disturbing themes
3) Many aspects and parts of the game may only be really appreciated by those of a certain age and over (general mood, characters, dialog, choices and so on...)

4) Everyone should play Malkavian because it makes the game awesome.

That it does. Unfortunately, that would make the forum gaming experience rather one-sided and limited in scope, don't you think? /:-)

Certainly reasonable to be thinking about our next game. Going through the last half-year, I see Super Metroid mentioned, and then there's the various games mentioned on this page; anybody want to champion one of those? Also, if people have any interest, I'd totally be up for championing an Infocom game.  (Planetfall, Trinity, and A Mind Forever Voyaging are the ones I'd be most interest in going through.)

In the light of all the games already suggested here and there, it's maybe not the smartest idea to mention even another one. But this one I have been playing lately, and so I wouldn't mind championing it:

X-Com: UFO Defense aka UFO: Enemy Unknown

It is the epitome of a vintage game in many ways - full of smart design ideas that never were bested, mostly because (sadly), nobody ever tried to; very retro when it comes to graphics and the (somewhat clunky) interface, but still perfectly playable.

Plus, it's a rather unique blend of a management sim and a tactical turn-based RPG, so it's pretty far away of most games we played here lately.

And, something I found out very quickly: It's utterly intense, able to induce proper fear in a genre that is usually considered to be slow (and, by some, boring).

I am definitely interested in playing an Infocom game. I've never played one, but I've read some Let's Plays of some and found them really funny. I think it would be a good learning experience for me.

I'll open up a thread discussing Infocom possibilities in a week and a half, then. (After GDC.) Though if somebody else wants to open up a nomination thread for another game before then, that's perfectly fine, too: I'd like to do an Infocom game at some point, but there's no reason why it has to be right now.

I don't see Baldur's Gate on the previous games list, always wanted to play it so I'm definately in favour of that. Also, my GOG account is getting dusty, metaphorically speaking.

As something very different...

What about Final Fantasy Legend 2 (AKA SaGa 2)? I haven't seen any classic gameboy games, Saga 2 is usually held as the best of the SaGa series, but is a little more accessible than the early wizardry games. Also, nothing quite like it.
