Does anybody else have Junpei's hat? From the preorder bonus? I wear that thing all the time.

Junpei's character is awkward in the sense that most of his backstory (in the male route) does not occur until the very end. He changes a great deal throughout the game, has his own journey, but his behavior has roots in something that isn't clear until nearly the last minute.

Unless, of course, female social link with him XD I'm pretty sure he starts opening up about his past Rank 4-5 IIRC, so really not all that far in at all

Junpei...resents and even resists your leadership, down to the snarky way he accepts tactics changes ("All right. Fine.")

Ah, Junpei... the poor guy just can't get a break.  He's a lousy student in an environment where being a good student is everything.  He doesn't belong to any clubs, doesn't participate in any sport.  Given the tremendous pressure he's under to be everything he's not as a Gekkoukan student, I'm able to forgive him for being a jerk when he loses his one opportunity to distinguish himself as SEES team leader to our main character.

I wasn't his biggest fan at first but the more times I play P3, the more he really grows on me.  Also, I'm not sure that I'd like him as much as I do if his wasn't the voice of Vic Mignogna.

I was a little confused by how easily intimidated Junpei in particular was by the "punks" at the station. This is a guy who routinely fights demons with nothing but his mental power and a two-handed sword, yet he runs into a random thug and gets taken down in one punch?

I was wondering about this too... I think that in the mind of Junpei, there is a clear delineation between the regular world and the dark hour.  In the regular world, Junpei knows he isn't cutting it as a student and his self-confidence suffers because of it.  But he gets to compensate for that during the dark hour--he sees it as a chance to prove himself and his self-confidence shoots sky high.  Mitsuru chides Akihiko for treating SEES work as a game but I think she ought to have serious words with Junpei since he seems to underestimate the shadows' threat to a greater degree... Maybe he just doesn't think the dark hour is real--that it's more like being in a video game.    I think this kind of attitude might explain why he would turn into a coward when faced with the punks of Port Island Station.  The punks are in the regular world and that is a place in which Junpei has no spine.  But it also begs the question: if Junpei doesn't appropriately fear the shadows, what's there to be so confident about?

@Ernie_R: I like that interpretation of the disconnect between "Dark Hour Junpei" and "Real World Junpei." The whole idea of normal kids fighting monsters by night is a pretty potent fantasy; I think it's appropriate that the gamer character would be the most intrigued by it, arguably to the point of not fully understanding what the stakes are.

And let's not forget junpei also played the SMT mmo (which is freemium now I think). So despite being a silly reference, we can at least infer he likes RPGs...

Actually that's kind of weird and wonderfully meta... Junpei is an RPG character who likes... RPGs... And feels better when in the more traditional aspect of the RPG (tartarus)

@Emie_R: I see what you're saying about the two different perspectives for Junpei, and am inclined to agree that he doesn't always take it as seriously as he should. You make a good point about his real-life frustrations. Personally, I love the guy. However, there is also the very real difference that in fighting shadows, Junpei can summon Hermes--a Persona, an aspect of himself that is strong, protects him, and can be used to fight back. He cannot literally summon Hermes in the real world, whether or not he can or would summon him metaphorically--which might say something about his character.

In a possible flip-side, even if Junpei should take the Dark Hour more seriously, I really think that Yukari (in particular) and the MC should've taken those punks more seriously. Coward? Junpei was the only one who seemed truly aware of how bad that situation could get, while Yukari was making things worse.

I also rather think that Junpei (at least at the start of the game) enjoys the clarity of the Dark Hour: it's clearly Us vs. Them. The real world is much messier.

Just went to see a movie with junpei. The american films. Interesting reaction of "I wish I was born the in the USA"

Brings up the interesting point of the mythological USA I suppose. Possibly worth exploring here, although Junpei's fascination with myth and fantasy has already been talked about a little here.

And then, that night, walking Koro with Junpei he was reflecting on the films... Talking about how he loves the fact the heroines understand the hero's trials, and importantly, how it would suck if no one knew anything about the events.

The only thing I had to add here so far, is that I'm playing as the female character. Junpei annoyed me so I ignored his invites, and chose the most negative responses.

By the time Yuko starts calling him stupei, and I felt like we were ganging up on him.

Mmm, that early game difference between male and female playthrough is just outstanding. The fact junpei is hitting on you, Yukari aligns herself more strongly with you really makes the FeMC feel so much different
