| In my ongoing (/futile) quest to clear up as much of my backlog as possible before I start grad school in August, I recently reacquainted myself with this little gem that came out as an import on Wii Virtual Console a few years ago. Has anyone else played it? It's a sequel to the NES game Milon's Secret Castle - which I have vague childhood memories of, none of them positive - that reimagines that game's puzzle-centric gameplay as a 16-bit platformer. The thing is, though, it's a really, really good platformer. The level designs from the food-themed second world on are just bursting with invention, and it has a very relaxing difficulty level: it's not as mindlessly easy as your average Kirby game, but not as frustratingly difficult as Sonic. Anybody like me with a fondness for classic 2D platformers should definitely check it out. One caveat: the Wii version is untranslated in Japanese. There is apparently an English translation patch out there if you wanted to go the emulator route, but to be honest I'm not sure the game gains much from the text; the narrative seems pretty bare-bones, and it's obviously intended for children. Plus there's very little kanji, so I'm able to stumble through some of the dialogue with my woefully inadequate Japanese training (and then weep a little over my complete lack of proficiency)!
