Interesting potential discussion occurred to me - Persona 3's ability to give the feeling of agency to its players.

Many recent JRPGs like FFXIII most obviously, stopped trying to hide how linear JRPGs are. And persona 3 is heavily linear when you get right down to it. But somehow manages to avoid feeling like you have no agency in the world.

Obviously this is because you have a lot of power over your daily life as opposed to the core story, but I think this is certainly something worth spending some time discussing.

Forum: Persona 3

Horror game for October

In the new game discussion thread, several of us were interested in doing something spooky for October. This is a little different because we're interested in a genre rather than the game, so I thought we could vote on a few titles to see what people are interested in. I'm listing series of games just by the title of the series and if one of those is picked, we'll decide on the exact game after that. I would assume we'll be doing the first or second game in the series.

Comments and suggestions are extremely welcome! I like horror games a lot, but my actual experience is kind of limited. The list is mostly coming from the other thread.

Edit now that I've made the poll:

I said System Shock 2 because it seems like the first one isn't really a horror game. I'm also really interested in Sweet Home, but it's a NES era Japanese game so finding a legit copy is impossible, but there's probably a translated ROM somewhere.

I made it so you can vote for multiples mostly because I realized I want to play most of these. Let's just see how this all turns out.

Again, please make suggestions, especially if there's a glaring absence.

Forum: What game next?

Man, this game is hard. I think I've died 30 times now.

I found the Level-1 very fast and beat it pretty easily, too. Now I'm trying to get rupees to buy a thing that looks like it might be a raft. I'm avoiding walkthroughs, so don't tell me if I'm wrong. I'll find out.

So far, I like how little it tells you. There's sort of a feeling that if you just keep going, it'll work out. Most of the challenges are skill rather than puzzle and barriers are less "you need this thing to go here" and more "you need to just learn how not to die so fast".

Anyone one else trying to do this after getting the Nintendo Ambassador stuff?

Forum: What Vintage Games Are You Playing Now?

Persona 3 Mechanical discussion

Persona 3 is a quite mechanical game. Some even describe it as almost a roguelike. Borrowing things like stamina, lots of random events possible in the dungeons (from the cards to high/low monster floors, chances of running into death) as well as the tight integration of all the various systems (all systems tie back into the dungeon crawling somehow, and that leaks out into the rest of game, e.g tireness making study less useful, and training cutting out some study time).

So anything interesting mechanics wise people want to look at? Persona fusion mechanics might want to stay in the persona thread perhaps?

Forum: Persona 3

A lot of folks have been looking for a place to discuss the new Deus Ex, and this seemed like the place. I can already imagine people replaying this several years from now, so I think it qualifies as Vintage. Was going to put this in the Deus Ex section of the board but wasn't sure, Moderators feel free to move it if you wish.

So I'm really enjoying the game so far, but the boss fights are so out of place they are making me more frustrated and angry than they would in any other game; and I don't like boss fights at the best of times.

Anyway... Continued thoughts?

Tag spoilers if possible, I think you can create them as White Text on a White Background to make them invisible until highlighted.
I just started Catherine, the Persona team's latest game; I'm only a couple of hours into it, and while a couple of hours in that game is a much larger chunk than a couple of hours of a Persona game, it's still not very far, so I don't have anything to say about it yet. But I figured I'd open up a thread in case anybody else wants to talk about the two games; hopefully I'll have something more to say in a week or two...
Forum: Persona 3

In my many commutes when not playing p3 I'm currently getting through ffvs 4 job fiesta. A challenge where you only get 4 jobs, on from each crystal... Randomly choosen.

I'm really enjoying it too. Usually I get bogged down in ffv by feeling I need this ability of that class and this one of another and it's just so overwhelming... But as it stands my knight ranger summoner trio actually has a lot of room of variation without being too difficult... Although I'm aching for some white magic....

Ah FFV... It's actually one of the only FFs I've both never finished and never gotten very far in.
Forum: What Vintage Games Are You Playing Now?
